Peacekeepers from Kazakhstan completed their mission

01.11.2023

The mission in Mali was the most dangerous and one of the largest of all UN peacekeeping operations

Two servicemen of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, after a year of service as part of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), returned to their homeland, Kazpravda.kz reports with reference to the Center for Peacekeeping Operations of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

As the Center noted, they are the first and only military personnel from Kazakhstan who were part of the mission in the African republic, since on June 30 of this year the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution ending the work of MINUSMA at the request of the transitional government of Mali.

The mission in Mali was established on April 25, 2013 and was the most dangerous of all UN peacekeeping operations: over 10 years, 309 peacekeepers died in the line of duty. The mission was also one of the largest - at the time of closure, MINUSMA personnel numbered a total of 15 thousand people.

During the year, two servicemen of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan, as staff officers, performed a set of tasks for coordination, interaction with MINUSMA components, and logistics support for the mission.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Tulesov, the mission was not easy, and in a constantly changing situation it was necessary to be aware of what was happening, what was the level of security in all sectors of the mission.

“We collected and analyzed information, prepared recommendations and proposals to mission headquarters on technical support issues, and also inspected and verified the readiness of UN bases in sectors and areas of responsibility,” explains Lieutenant Colonel Ermek Tulesov.

Having arrived in Kazakhstan, the officer plans to continue teaching at the Center for Peacekeeping Operations of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan and train peacekeepers for other UN missions, sharing valuable experience with young military personnel.

As noted in the press service, Lieutenant Colonel Tulesov has more than one peacekeeping mission under his belt. Several years ago he served as part of the UN mission in Western Sahara.
