Medical examinations of future newlyweds may be introduced in Kazakhstan

23.05.2023

In Kazakhstan, by analogy with a number of foreign countries, it is proposed to introduce a health passport for married couples, which involves a comprehensive medical examination of future newlyweds, Kazpravda.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The draft Concept for the protection of maternal and child health "Every woman - every child" provides for the development and implementation of the project "Health Passport for Married Couples", which involves voluntary preventive examinations of girls and boys before marriage.

The goal of the project is to identify some diseases that have the greatest impact on the development of maternal mortality, maintain and strengthen the reproductive and somatic health of young people, timely early detection of genetic, somatic and infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and start treatment earlier before pregnancy planning.

“In Kazakhstan, 58.7% of infant deaths are premature babies born weighing less than 2,500 grams; 46% of all cases of maternal death are due to various chronic diseases of a woman.

In addition, there is the problem of the spread of sexually transmitted infections, which also affect human health and the health of future offspring. Thus, 74.7% of all new cases of HIV infection in Kazakhstan are due to sexual transmission, and the prevalence of the three main STIs - syphilis, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis - is 3-3.5 times higher than official statistics,” the Ministry of Health justified.

An analysis of international experience has shown that premarital medical examinations have been introduced in many countries of the world.

There are 3 medical conditions that have become the goals of the premarital medical examination.

“The impact on public health when a premarital medical examination reveals some diseases that have a strong impact on the health system.

Premarital medical checkups help prevent the deterioration of the health of future spouses and the birth of unhealthy offspring.

The choice of diseases for premarital examination was dictated by the possibility of preventing or treating a possible disease. Among such diseases are common: thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, HIV, hepatitis B and C, rubella, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases, ”the agency listed.
