Senator proposes solutions to eliminate water shortage in Astana
Kazakhstan may face water shortage of 80% by 2040. Senator Bibigul Zheksenbay spoke about the problems with the provision of drinking water to the residents of Astana and ways to solve them in her parliamentary inquiry, Kazpravda.kz reports citing the press service of the upper house of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
At present, the water shortage in the capital is 30,000 cubic meters per day. The reason for this, according to the senator, is the intensive construction of houses, especially on the left bank. Another factor is that the Irtysh River is diverted to the industrial center of Karaim in Xinjiang. Thus, the inflow of water from the Irtysh-Karaganda canal to Astana also decreases.
“I propose to consider alternative directions for the diversion of the Irtysh waters to the capital, in addition to the project through the Satpaev Canal, to adopt new approaches to the management of transboundary water resources in accordance with international practice in the distribution of water, to study the experience of water saving, successfully used in world practice, to systematize the work on training personnel in in the field of water management, to update knowledge in the field of integrated water resources management,” the senator suggested.
Earlier, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan announced 3 options for eliminating water shortages in Astana.
